This is the second event in a series of races planned and organized by Batelco Staff Centre in association with Batelco Karting Board. The first race, held last February, proved to be a popular event for both drivers and their families.
"It's a fun sport to watch with plenty of overtaking, plus it's easy enough for most Batelco staff to participate," said Habib Ashoor, Batelco Staff Centre Manager.
"There has been increased demand from our staff to host a second event. So far we have received 18 entry forms compared to only 13 for the first event."
Batelco's first Interdepartmental Karting Challenge at Adhari Go-kart saw over 100 Batelco staff drivers from various departments and more than 200 fans and family members cheering along.
Team Dunamis, managed by Osama Alsaad and captained by Aseel Matar, won the first race. Other team members were Aala AlAlawi, Ali Abbas and Maitham Ashoor. The runner up team was the Arrivals.
For the second race, scheduled for Saturday 18, the race format has been modified to allow for more teams to participate. Now it's a full 4 hour race, compared to just 2 hours in the first event. It is a bigger event with more teams taking part and bigger prizes to be won.
Moreover, the first hour will see 18 teams compete for a spot in the actual 4 hour challenge. Each team with its 4 to 6 drivers will go around the circuit with the aim to score fast laps. Only the top 13 teams, the drivers to exhibit greater kart driving skills, will make it through.
This qualify-or-get-left-out format has generated much excitement from participating teams.
Adhari Go-kart circuit race director Hamad Al Modaweb said that they had noticed at least 3 Batelco staff teams practicing consistently at Adhari Go-kart circuit in the past week.
"We have had to open the circuit early just to accommodate drivers who are preparing for the 4 hour race. There isn’t much time left and everyone wants to sharpen their driving skills," he said.
"We're pleased that Batelco chose to host its second corporate race at our circuit. We've increased the safety measures, fine tuned our karts and brought in more marshals to ensure a safe and fun race. I encourage families and children to come and experience the fun", he added.
